How the Focus Score is calculated
Updated
The Focus Score adds up four parts. Each part has a value from 0 to 100 and a weight; value times weight gives its points, and the points add up to the score.
The four parts and their weights
| Part | Weight | Measured on a day when | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priority alignment | 30% | you closed at least one task | how much of the effort you closed went to your priority goals |
| Plan execution | 30% | at least one task is scheduled for today | how much of the effort planned for today you closed |
| Deep work | 25% | you ran a focus session of 5 minutes or more | your protected minutes and your longest unbroken block |
| Mental clarity | 15% | you answered Today’s Read | the clarity you reported in that read |
Priority alignment
Each task you closed is weighed by its goal’s priority:
- a task on a Priority 1 goal counts in full
- a task on a Priority 2 goal counts at 60 percent
- a task on any other goal counts at 15 percent
If any closed task has a duration, tasks are weighed by minutes, and a task without one counts as 30 minutes. With no durations at all, the part counts tasks.
Plan execution
This part compares the tasks scheduled for today with the ones you closed, by duration when you set one. Work you close that was not scheduled for today does not raise it; the score sheet lists it as closed off your plan.
Until you close your first scheduled task, this part is left out, so a planned morning never shows a zero. Once the day is over, a planned day with nothing closed counts as 0.
Deep work
Deep work counts the minutes you run on the Timer or the Stopwatch:
- your total minutes against 90 make up 60 percent of the part
- your longest unbroken block against 45 minutes makes up the other 40
Sessions under 5 minutes are ignored, and the Counter and Audio tools do not count.
Mental clarity
This is your answer to the clarity question in that day’s Today’s Read, from Foggy to Sharp. Nothing else goes into it.
A part with no data is left out
A part that was not measured does not count as zero. It is left out, and the parts that were measured share its weight. Skip Today’s Read on a day when the other three parts were measured, and those three carry about 35, 35 and 29 percent.
A score built from one or two parts says less than one built from four, so check which capsules were counted before you compare two days.
Check the arithmetic in the score sheet
Tap the dial or a capsule to open the Focus Score sheet. It lists today’s signals, one row per part: the value, the weight it carried today and the points it added. A part that was not measured shows a dash and Not counted today.
With a part selected, one line gives its evidence in your own numbers, such as “4 of 6 tasks on your priority goals” or “35 min protected, longest block 25 min”. Each row is rounded on its own, so on some days the rows add up to one point more or less than the score.
