How do goals and tasks work in FocusPilot?

Updated

In FocusPilot, a goal is the outcome you want and its tasks are the steps toward it. Every goal has a category and can have a deadline and a priority. Each task has its own day.

What does a goal have?

A goal is the result you want, such as “Close the seed round”. It has:

  • a category: Professional, Personal or Health
  • an optional deadline: the card you fill in by hand starts on today until you pick a day, and a goal with no deadline waits under Long-term
  • an optional priority: Priority 1 to Priority 4

Its tasks are the steps. Each task has its own day, and can have a time and a duration.

The category decides which ring the goal fills on Home. The priority decides how much its closed tasks count for your Focus Score: Edit a goal explains both.

How is the Goals tab laid out?

The row at the top of Goals holds:

  • the ⋯ menu, with Display, the weekly log and review, and Add goal
  • the status tabs Active, Missed and Completed
  • the black +, which opens Extract goals

While your Inbox holds tasks, an Inbox pill with the count appears in that row, and Completed moves into the ⋯ menu.

How is the Active list grouped?

  • Goals due within a month come first.
  • Repeating holds goals with a repeat rule of their own.
  • Long-term holds goals due a month or more away, or with no deadline. A long-term goal moves up by itself once its deadline is less than a month off.
  • Paused goals wait at the end of the list.

How do I tick off a task?

Tap its circle. The first tap marks it in progress and the second marks it done. Anything still open after its deadline moves to Missed, where you can pick it up again within seven days. Complete, undo or delete a goal has the details.

What is the Inbox?

The Inbox holds tasks that belong to no goal yet, such as “Call the dentist”. Tasks land there when:

  • Extract goals or the Mentor finds a task that fits none of your goals
  • you choose Add as task on a line in Home’s For today list

Tap the Inbox pill at the top of Goals to see them. Each task’s menu offers:

  • Move to goal… to file it under one of your goals
  • Make it a goal to turn it into a goal of its own

Inbox tasks still show on Home and in the Calendar on their day. An Inbox task never moves to Missed, and the Inbox is never counted as a goal.
