What is the journal check-in?

Updated

The journal check-in is three short questions asked before a journal page opens: how you feel, how your momentum is, and what your main focus is today. It takes a few taps, and over time the answers show your patterns.

The three questions

  1. How are you feeling? Five steps: Bad, Not great, Okay, Good and Great.
  2. How is your momentum right now? Stalled, Building or On fire.
  3. What’s your main focus for today? One of nine areas: Work, Self care, People, Hobby, Chores, Learning, Fun, Rest or Nature.

The first two move on as soon as you tap an answer. On the third, tap Next to open the editor.

Skip a question

You can skip any question, and a skipped one records nothing. A check-in with one answer is still a check-in.

When the check-in appears

It comes first when you start a Check-in, Today’s prompt, Free writing, Mentor’s topic or Reflection page. Sort thoughts, Decision and Note go straight to the page. See The eight kinds of journal page.

To add a check-in to an entry you already wrote:

  1. Open the entry.
  2. Tap ⋯.
  3. Choose Check-in.

Where your answers show up

  • On the entry: your answers sit at the foot of the entry’s card, and search finds them. Searching for Building lists the entries where you answered Building.
  • In Insights: the Breakdown card shows your most common answer to each question for the timeframe you pick. See What the Activity and Journal charts show.
  • In Today’s Read: your recent check-ins are part of what it reads when it describes your day.
  • In Mentor chats: the Mentor sees your check-ins while Journal in Mentor chat is on in Preferences. See What does the Mentor know about you?
