The eight kinds of journal page
Updated
When you tap + on the Journal tab, New entry offers eight kinds of page. Each one opens the editor differently, and five of them start with the three check-in questions.
The eight kinds at a glance
| Kind | What it opens | Check-in first |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in | three quick questions about how you feel, your momentum and your main focus, then the page | Yes |
| Today’s prompt | a prompt that changes every day | Yes |
| Free writing | an empty page | Yes |
| Mentor’s topic | a page the Mentor opens with a topic from your week | Yes |
| Reflection | a few short questions about a moment, then the page | Yes |
| Sort thoughts | a page to write everything down, with no title | No |
| Decision | a decision with its options, reasoning and a review date | No |
| Note | a page for something to keep, nothing more | No |
Pages that help you start
Today’s prompt gives you one line to write from, and it changes every day. You can use the line as the entry’s title or add it to the entry as a quote.
Mentor’s topic lets the Mentor read your week and open the page with a topic to write about. If it cannot, the page opens empty and you write as usual.
Reflection asks a few short questions about the moment you want to understand before the page opens, so you start with a frame for it.
Pages for work in progress
Sort thoughts is for getting everything out of your head. There is no title and no check-in. Afterwards, the Mentor can put it in order for you; see Use the Mentor in your journal.
Decision records what you decided and why, with a date to read it back. See Record a decision and review it later.
Note is for something you want to keep, with nothing else asked of you.
Which kinds ask the check-in
Check-in, Today’s prompt, Free writing, Mentor’s topic and Reflection ask the three check-in questions before the page opens. You can skip any of them. Sort thoughts, Decision and Note go straight to the page.
